We were visiting one of Sharian’s arcane colleagues. This particular one was neither my master’s favorite nor my own, as his expertise lay in one of the most unsavory branches of arcane knowledge: necromancy. While not an area of magick Sharian favored, he was always adamant that it was not inherently evil. "Life and Death are merely two sides of the same coin, lad. Death is needed for Life, and Life feeds Death." And so, here we were.
We had come seeking knowledge about a certain hidden vault in a lost city—knowledge that could only be obtained by consulting the spirits of the departed. To no one’s surprise, the necromancer’s study was filled with bones, ashes, preserved creatures in jars, and all the other trappings of his somber craft. Yet what truly caught my attention were the candles.
Even the candles spoke of death.
Heavily scented, no doubt to mask the unpleasant odors of his spell components, they were eerily shaped like curving backbones. The vertebrae of the wax seemed so lifelike, each one distinct and carefully crafted. As the flames burned, molten wax dripped down their lengths, giving them the look of bones slowly decaying under time’s relentless touch. Even inanimate objects in this wizard’s tower seemed to embody the passage of life into death.
