New! Gandy Dancers - Antique Hitching Post with Hobo Code

This hoboglyph project has been a long time in the making. I first learned about hoboglyphs when writing a paper about glyphs in architecture and have been intrigued ever since. I’m no expert, it’s just something I found interesting and thought it would be fun to re-create the tradition in our virtual world.

Being a hobo and riding the rails in the mid 19th and early 20th century was dangerous way to earn a living. The hobo symbols helped traveling workers survive and were used for guidance for themselves and fellow migrant workers.

There’s much information online about hoboglyphs. If you’re curious, check them out. www.collectorsweekly.com/articles/dont-call-them-bums-the…

The build is partial mesh and 2 copy/mod prims:

The hitching post is original mesh. You can’t actually hitch anything to it. The hitching post is just a prop for the changeable hobo codes. The prim with the codes displayed is a standard prim. When you left mouse click the symbol/glyph prim, a pop-down menu will appear.

I have also attached another standard prim as the root/parent prim so you can place the hitching post outside your parcel borders. Passing hobos can see it better and can change the symbol.

I’ve also included a code key, a visual guide to be used to identify each code symbol. Just click on the hitching post to receive it.

*Anyone and everyone can change the symbols and that’s what the post is about – communication.

You can also unlink the build and place the code prim by itself on a fence, pole, wall, tree or wherever you want instead.

This would be a good addition to a railside or roadside parcel/region for roleplay, RP or anywhere us digital nomads might spot it. 🙂

Thanks.
